Pourtant, le lac Champlain a effectivement fait partie de la Nouvelle-France pendant plus de 100 ans. Et ce week-end, nous sommes all\u00e9s d\u00e9couvrir ce qui restait aujourd\u2019hui de cette p\u00e9riode historique. Et c&rsquo;est logique. Les \u00a0\u00bb perdants \u00a0\u00bb sont souvent oubli\u00e9s par l&rsquo;histoire, et il est certain que la pr\u00e9sence des Fran\u00e7ais dans cette r\u00e9gion s&rsquo;est termin\u00e9e par une d\u00e9faite des Fran\u00e7ais et la conclusion d&rsquo;un chapitre de l&rsquo;histoire de la Nouvelle-France en Am\u00e9rique. En 1759, la Nouvelle France n&rsquo;existe plus. La France a tourn\u00e9 la page.<\/p>\n<p>Avec en 2009 le 400\u00e8me anniversaire du Lac Champlain et de sa d\u00e9couverte par Samuel de Champlain en 1609, il nous semblait que c\u2019\u00e9tait un bon moment pour faire ce voyage dans le pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Notre p\u00e9riple nous a amen\u00e9 tout autour du lac Champlain au Vermont et dans l\u2019\u00e9tat de New York et jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la rivi\u00e8re Richelieu au Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019histoire commence en fait \u00e0 <em>Isle La Motte<\/em>, que l\u2019on dit \u00eatre le premier endroit ou Samuel de Champlain a d\u00e9barqu\u00e9 en juillet 1609 lors de sa d\u00e9couverte du lac Champlain. Habituellement, il est \u00e9crit que cela a eu lieu au d\u00e9but du mois de juillet mais les experts pensent maintenant que ce serait plut\u00f4t \u00e0 la fin du mois. (Fin juillet, il combattait les Iroquois dans la r\u00e9gion de Ticonderoga). A l\u2019\u00eele La Motte, vous pourrez admirer la statue de Champlain, et d\u2019un des indiens qui l\u2019accompagnait.<\/p>\n<p>Vous y apprendrez aussi que cette \u00eele est en fait le lieu du premier \u00e9tablissement europ\u00e9en au Vermont (nous ne le savions pas!). Ce sont des fran\u00e7ais, bien s\u00fbr, qui se sont \u00e9tablis l\u00e0, lorsque le capitaine Pierre La Motte et son r\u00e9giment Carignan-Sali\u00e8res y construisirent le Fort St Anne en 1666. Cette installation n&rsquo;allait cependant pas durer longtemps.<\/p>\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, il ne reste plus de traces de ce fort de bois, mais l\u2019endroit est tr\u00e8s agr\u00e9able pour un pique-nique, avec ses pelouses, ses arbres et sa vue sur le lac, et c\u2019est aussi un endroit r\u00eav\u00e9 pour un mariage \u00e0 cause de son \u00e9glise ext\u00e9rieure mais prot\u00e9g\u00e9e d\u2019un auvent, (dite St-Anne\u2019s Shrine)\u2026 tout un endroit!<\/p>\n<p>Avec les ann\u00e9es qui passent, les fran\u00e7ais se d\u00e9placent ensuite le long du lac et construisent plusieurs forts sur ses rives, afin de se prot\u00e9ger (et de prot\u00e9ger leurs activit\u00e9s de commerce de la fourrure \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al) tout d\u2019abord des indiens et ensuite des Anglais qui sont au sud. La rivi\u00e8re Richelieu et le lac Champlain constituent une voie de communication essentielle, \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les d\u00e9placements par voie terrestre restent tr\u00e8s difficiles.<\/p>\n<p>Les Fran\u00e7ais ont construit le premier de ces forts en 1733-1734 et l&rsquo;ont appel\u00e9 Fort Saint-Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric. \u00c0 <em>Crown Point<\/em>, (dans l\u2019\u00e9tat du New York, et accessible \u00e0 partir du Vermont, par le pont qui traverse le lac Champlain), vous pouvez encore voir quelques pierres des fondations du premier fort de pierres construit par les fran\u00e7ais en 1734, et qu\u2019ils avaient appel\u00e9s Fort St Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric. Vous pouvez aussi admirer les ruines du fort britannique construit ult\u00e9rieurement. Le drapeau britannique flotte encore haut dans le ciel au-dessus des ruines.<\/p>\n<p>Encore l\u00e0, un endroit agr\u00e9able pour une promenade, avec ses \u00e9tendues vertes et sa vue sur le lac un peu plus bas. Ensuite, en traversant le pont, vous arrivez \u00e0 <em>Chimney Point<\/em> o\u00f9 vous pourrez apprendre qu\u2019il y a eu l\u00e0 des familles fran\u00e7aises qui se sont install\u00e9es au temps o\u00f9 le Fort St Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric les prot\u00e9geait.<\/p>\n<p>Quand vous continuez vers le sud, en longeant le lac du c\u00f4t\u00e9 ouest (\u00e9tat de New York), vous arrivez \u00e0 <em>Fort Ticonderoga<\/em>, fort de pierres imposant en forme d\u2019\u00e9toile et riche d\u2019histoire du temps de la guerre dite French and Indian War (guerre de 7 ans) du milieu des ann\u00e9es 1700 et de la r\u00e9volution am\u00e9ricaine.<\/p>\n<p>Construit par les fran\u00e7ais en 1755-1757, il s\u2019appelait le Fort Carillon. Sa forme en \u00e9toile est tr\u00e8s caract\u00e9ristique de l\u2019architecture militaire fran\u00e7aise de l\u2019\u00e9poque, dont vous avez peut-\u00eatre vu d\u2019autres exemples si vous avez visit\u00e9 La Citadelle (1820) \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec, le Fort McHenry (1796-1803) \u00e0 Baltimore ou encore le Fort Warren (1833) sur l\u2019\u00eele George dans le port de Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Ils ont tous \u00e9t\u00e9 dessin\u00e9s selon les principes architecturaux \u00e9tablis par S\u00e9bastien de Vauban, ing\u00e9nieur militaire fran\u00e7ais du 17\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Ticonderoga a d\u00e9finitivement \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin de nombreuses actions militaires, captur\u00e9 successivement par les anglais, les am\u00e9ricains (Ethan Allen et ses Green Mountain Boys) et de nouveau par les anglais.<\/p>\n<p>Pour la visite, soyez s\u00fbrs d\u2019allouer 2 ou 3 heures. Fort Ticonderoga poss\u00e8de notamment l&rsquo;une des plus grandes collections de cornes \u00e0 poudre grav\u00e9es britanniques du pays.<\/p>\n<p>Et prenez ensuite le court ferry pour aller admirer la vue du haut du Mount Independence, colline du Vermont qui domine le Fort Ticonderoga.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s notre visite du Fort Ticonderoga, notre voyage \u00e9tait loin d\u2019\u00eatre termin\u00e9. Le lendemain nous attendait une autre d\u00e9couverte, celle du <em>Fort Chambly<\/em> dans la vall\u00e9e de la rivi\u00e8re Richelieu, au Qu\u00e9bec. Remarquablement r\u00e9nov\u00e9, le fort a aussi un superbe mus\u00e9e qui raconte l\u2019histoire fran\u00e7aise de toute la r\u00e9gion, de la ville de Qu\u00e9bec jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Albany au sud de l\u2019\u00e9tat de New York.
